One bad decision can cost you everything. One moment of weakness can tarnish a goal that you've been striving after day in and day out. It ONLY takes one a moment of vulnerability to take control and knock you out for the count. In my case one dozen donuts had my name on it with 12 days out from one of the biggest shows of my life.
I am sure you are thinking the following:
1. You workout everyday 12 donuts won't effect your body!
2. What in the world are you doing eating 12 donuts?
3. How did you eat 12 donuts?
Yes, I'm human believe it or not and I ate 12 vanilla dipped donuts with the sprinkles on top! I love sprinkles "BIG KID". I let a moment of weakness creep in during an essential phase of my competition prep, which cost me 1st place.
After I ate my donuts, I immediately regretted the damaged that I did and how it would diminish my progress. Nutrition wise, the dozen donuts costed me 3,500 calories, well over 4,000 mg of sodium, 200 g fat, and 180 g of sugar! YIKES!! My current regime was low sodium, low fats, and moderate carbs. How did this all effect my body? I am going to simply break it down into two words. SODIUM RETENTION! I blew up from the processed sugar and fats (CRAP) that my body wasn't accustomed of consuming. 10 lbs of water weight is not an easy task to get rid of.
Deep down inside I wanted to give up and throw the competition in down the drain. I had no choice, but to come clean and tell my coach. It was the worst feeling ever! It was as dreadful as taking the walk of shame to the principles office in grade school. To say the least he was not happy with me, which was to be expected. 5 months of energy, discipline, and hard work went to waste.
In order for me to have a decent shot of participating I had to cut my carbs completely and workout 3x a day. If you never been on 0 carbs I dare you to try it for a day and let me know how that goes! LOL!
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
I began my first cardio session at 3:30 a.m.,workout two was around noon, and my third session was at 7:30 p.m. That was my workout routine everyday for the next 10 days because of those stupid donuts. Not only was it physically draining, but my emotional state was being tested as well.
To overcome this internal conflict I had to refocus and forget about those 12 donuts. The NOW, the PRESENT was my goal. To dominate every workout, every cardio session, and dial in on my nutrition was the key to the end of the tunnel. I was more determined than ever to push my way through the storm.
Although, I had a major setback I learned a lot about myself in those 12 days. Many people asked me "So what did you gather from that experience and how will you prevent it from happening again?". I have to develop a stronger mindset to by restricting and silencing the distractions around me.
Never do I want to experience that kind of suffering EVER, EVER, EVER AGAIN!
